Jerry Fuchs (1974-2009)

We at Nuçi’s Space are extremely saddened by the death of our friend Jerry Fuchs.
Our hearts are filled with sorrow for his parents, his family and his friends.
Not only was Jerry an extremely talented drummer, he was a very close friend of Nuçi’s.
We can only hope that he and Nuçi together again are rocking the heavens with their music.
Sadly, the good ones always get away…

"In case she gets locked out..." Nuçi’s Space founder Receives Key to Athens

(Photo by Sharon Edwards Athens Banner-Herald)

Oct. 26, 2009

Nuçi’s Space founder Linda Phillips was given an honorary key to the city on Saturday (October 24th) from Athens mayor Heidi Davison. Phillips founded the non-profit support center for musicians after losing her son Nuçi to suicide in 1996.

Phillips received the key in front of a packed house at the Space’s 9th Anniversary Celebration. The crowd included local musicians, family members, friends as well as patients who had benefited from Phillips’ service to the Athens community. The building on Oconee Street near downtown opened its doors in the fall of 2000 and since then has helped over 650 musicians obtain professional counseling for depression.

Mayor Davison commended Phillips for her ability to turn the tragedy of losing her son into the creation of Nuçi’s Space. After 10 years of tireless work, Phillips is retiring from her role as counseling advocate and president of the Nuçi’s Space Board of Directors.

In her time as mayor of Athens, Davison has presented keys to exiting commanders of the U.S. Navy Supply Corps School, AthFest founder Jared Bailey and the filmmaking team behind “Darius Goes West.”

Nuçi’s Space is a non-profit health and music resource center in Athens, GA. The aim of the organization is to prevent suicide by providing obstacle free treatment for musicians suffering from depression and other such disorders as well as to assist in the emotional, physical and professional well-being of musicians.

Combing the web: Drive-By Truckers move units; Roy Coughlin gets archived; download Pride Parade's latest.

Drive-By Truckers new collection of B-sides and rarities The Fine Print outsold Taylor Swift last week, according to Country Music News Blog.

"This week they left Taylor Swift in the dust in overall record sales, making themselves the top-selling country act for the first week of September (according to StreetPulse)."

Thanks to NineBullets.org for the link!

Nuçi's Space staffer and local musician Roy Coughlin is featured on Sloan Simpson's Southern Shelter website - a database of amazing local concert recordings. Check it out.

Jimmy Hughes (Folklore, Elf Power) has been editing up video footage of Vic Chesnutt's latest European tour, which featured Elf Power as the backing band. The videos are great - the collection is on YouTube.

PeachBuzz goes record shopping with Vanessa Hay and more...

Pitchfork Media gave Circulatory System's long-awaited record Signal Morning a great review. We were lucky enough to host the band during this year's AthFest and they were INCREDIBLE.

For video of CS during AthFest, check out this great video playlist.

The AJC's "lifestyle" column PeachBuzz really stepped out of their comfort zone last week - literally. Peachbuzz left the big city and popped into Athens to drive around listening to local music with Pylon/Supercluster vocalist and Athens legend Vanessa Hay.
Check it out here - lots of local bands and record labels get mentioned.

Pride Parade gets hyped by Rolling Stone...

photo by mike white (deadly designs)

"Pride Parade, a hyperkenetic Athens band big on brawn and bellow."

So says Rolling Stone online's HYPE MONITOR. The blog named-checked Pride Parade on yesterday... their new album Dose will be officially released on vinyl on September 12th at Caledonia (featuring The Jack Burton and Black Skies).

Reward: GigWorn robberies

This is bizarre news from downtown Athens. GigWorn is a super-cool clothing shop a couple doors down from Cine and The National. The store is run by Sheridan Soileau, a Nuçi's Space volunteer and dedicated supporter of the Athens music scene.
For some strange reason, GigWorn has been broken into TWICE in the past week. Sheridan is offering a reward to anyone with ANY information that leads to an arrest and conviction of the perpetrator.

From the GigWorn Facebook:
Reward: $500 for any information leading to the arrest & conviction...
Gigworn was robbed August 7/8 and August 16 (9-midnight). If you have any information that can lead to the arrest and conviction of the people/person responsible, let me know. I will pay $500 when they are convicted. Thank you.

Romanenko needs your help!

ROMANENKO, posing in front of the record wall at Nuçi’s Space

Local trio Romanenko has had a HUGE wrench thrown into their plans to release their first full length album. One of the bandmembers had her house broken into and money the band had saved to be used to press the album and pay the studio for recording wasa stolen.
If you are able to help support the band and pre-order the record, details are below.

HELP SAVE OUR RECORD!

Thanks for stopping by our page! We have been in the studio working on our first full length record since April, and our cd release is scheduled for September 23, 2009. On August 2, Jessie's house was broken into and cash stolen. Money we had set aside for pressing the cd, paying our studio bill, and printing fliers for our release show now has to be used for rent, etc.

As you'd guess, this sets us back pretty damn far. We are reaching out to the community in hopes that we can go ahead with the release as planned-- which means we need to get the cd pressed, print fliers and posters to promote the show (September 23 at 40 Watt!), and make sure the wonderful people at dreamLab Recording get paid for all the hard work they've done for us. Whether you can give us ten cents, ten bucks, or just pass this along to your friends... every little bit will help us.
